PRINCIPAL MILITARY RIFLES: The Soviet-designed 7.62mm AKM assault rifle is the principal military weapon. It is manufactured by the East Germans who call it the 7.62mm MPi-KM. The East German-made copy of the Soviet AK47 assault rifle, called MPi-K and the East German-made copy of the Soviet 7.62mm SKS carbine, called K-S, are still extensively used. A caliber .22 Long Rifle version of the MPi-KM, which is used for training, is also made in East Germany.

The East German SKS differs from the Soviet in having its sling attached through the butt rather than having a butt swivel, and in not having a mounted cleaning rod. The East German-made AK also does not carry a cleaning rod.

East German Sporting Rifles

A wide variety of East German sporting rifles are made, many of them for export. In addition Soviet produced target rifles in caliber .22 and 7.62mm are widely used.

.22 Caliber Training and Sporting Rifles

1. KKG Model 110—(KKG-Kleinkaliber Gewehr) training rifle with open sights, single shot bolt action.

2. KKG Model V—training rifle with open sights, bolt action with 5-shot magazine.

3. KKG Model I—target rifle for juveniles, drop block action, single shot with micrometer sight.

4. KKG Model IV—target rifle, single shot drop block with micrometer sight, heavier than KKG Model I.

5. KKG Model Olympia—match rifle, single shot bolt action with micrometer sight.

6. KKG Model KM (Krempel Meister)—bolt action match rifle, single shot with micrometer sight, palm, designed for women and young people.

7. KKG Model KW {Krempel Weitmeister)—bolt action match rifle, single shot with palm rest and micromctcr sight—the best quality East German .22 rifle.

Over-and-under rifle-shotgun combinations are made by Simson and Gebrüder-Merkel in Suhl, as are over-and-under rifles. Simson also makes drillings as does Fortuna. Drillings have two shotgun barrels over and a rifle barrel under.
